Review of Alfred Maudslay and the Maya, a Biography by Ian GrahamThe editor of Mesoamerica, an academic journal, requested that I write a review of Ian Graham's biography "Alfred Maudslay and the Maya," published by the University of Oklahoma Press by special arrangement with the British Musuem Press. During the 19th century, Maudslay conducted arduous explorations of the Maya world, making careful photographic records of the monuments and temples at such archaeological sites as Palenque, Yaxchilan, and Chichen Itza. His work inspired many of the great Mayanists of the next century, including Ian Graham, Maudslay's modern equivalent and author of this excellent book. My complete review appears in Mesoamerica, #47, Jan-Dec., 2005. |
